On October 24, 2021, Salym Petroleum Development N.V. (SPD) produced its 100 millionth ton of oil from the Salym fields since the start of the Salym project. It is symbolic that the milestone has been reached on the eve of the approaching Day of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra establishment. The flask with a portion of the jubilee tonne of oil will be donated to the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas in Khanty-Mansiysk.

The Salym project is one of the largest on shore projects with foreign capital in the Russian oil industry. The company is owned by Gazprom Neft and Shell on a parity basis. According to the 2020 rating of the Department of Subsoil Use of Khanty-Mansi Autonomous region – Yugra SPD ranks 6th among the leading oil companies operating in the region. The company produces 1.14% of Russian oil and 2.77% of Ugra oil.
The company has been developing the Salym Group of oil fields (West Salym, Upper Salym and Vadelyup) in the Nefteyugansk region, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug-Ugra since 2003. In 2008, the company equipped the entire well stock with remote monitoring and control systems known as "Smart Fields", which now allow SPD to produce oil efficiently, even under the new external challenges and constraints.
Working actively to develop its resource base, the company expanded the territory of the West Salym field by adding the Vostochno-Shapshinskiy area. Successful exploration drilling at the Upper Salym field confirmed the high potential of the south-eastern area, dubbed by the company as the South Hub.
In 2016, SPD obtained a licence to conduct exploration and appraisal work in the Yuzhno-Yamskoy licence area in Yugra. In January 2019, following an auction, SPD acquired a new licence area Vostochno-Shapshinsky 1. In 2020 SPD acquired a licence for exploration, prospecting, and production of conventional hydrocarbon reserves at Salymsky 2 as a result of a decision by the shareholder companies Gazprom Neft and Shell.
The company continues to grow and excel in exploration and production projects, well construction, as well as in production management and digitalisation and efficiency improvement.
SPD has completed more than 1,500 wells, including the longest well in the company's drilling history - more than 5,000 metres. More than 500 km of infield pipelines have been built and commissioned. SPD also employs horizontal drilling technology, it is working a number of projects environmental footprint, as well as implementing multi-stage fracturing and other enhanced oil recovery methods.
